Collection & Lifting Stations

Collection and lifting systems are used as a means of collecting and transferring waste liquids before processing. Lift stations are designed to pump wastewater or raw sewage from lower to higher elevations. This is important in cases where the elevation of the liquid source is not high enough to allow the waste liquid to travel down by gravity and reach the treatment plant.

The key elements of collection and lift stations include the wastewater receiving well (often called a “wet-well”), a lift pump, piping with valves and an electronic control station. The well is equipped with components to detect the level of liquid present, and when enough waste builds up, the pump pushes it upwards through the pressurised pipe system. A properly sized wet-well is essential when catering to specific applications. The well should be small enough to minimize the detention time of waste liquid, but it should also be large enough to prevent excessive starting and stopping of the lift station pump. All sewage pumps are specially designed to avoid clogging with debris, with either large open passages or maceration equipment to ensure that the waste liquid can pass easily through the internal components of the pump. The electronic controllers used as part of lifting stations are important in monitoring pump faults, liquid levels, alarms and other parameters to ensure that the system functions efficiently.
